Short Description

A handcrafted ceramic relief surface composed of elongated cylindrical modules finished in a variegated field of smoked black, mineral grey, warm ivory and oxide brown tones. Directional glaze transitions, glossy surface movement and curved profiles create a rhythmic architectural field with strong light, shadow and tonal depth.

Product Description

Smoked Mineral Cylinders (R6L5P1-WS) is a handcrafted ceramic surface produced by the VLVLK Team.

Constructed from elongated cylindrical ceramic modules, the surface creates a directional field through repetition, curvature and tonal variation. Smoked black passages, soft grey transitions, warm ivory sections and oxide-rich brown markings move across the modules, creating a surface that feels both controlled and naturally atmospheric.

The field is material-led. Variation emerges through glaze application, firing behaviour, clay body response and surface curvature rather than decorative patterning. Some pieces carry strong dark-to-light transitions, while others remain quieter, allowing the assembled field to balance rhythm, contrast and spatial depth.

At close range, individual cylinders reveal nuanced differences in glaze density, speckling, gloss response and tonal movement. At architectural scale, these components merge into a cohesive linear relief field with strong shadow behaviour and chromatic depth.

The resulting surface evokes smoked ceramic, weathered stone, mineral sediment, ash, oxide deposits and reflected light.

Suitable for residential, hospitality and commercial environments including walls, floors, wet areas, ponds and pools.

Installation

This surface has been curated to honour the individuality of each piece.

Please refer to the installation images provided to guide orientation, tonal distribution and overall composition. These reference layouts communicate the intended balance of direction, rhythm, contrast and material expression developed by the studio.

The orientation of the cylindrical modules affects light reflection and field movement and should be maintained according to the approved layout direction.

Product Note

You will receive the same or a closely related blend to the images shown.

As part of the Wabi-Sabi Edition, each production batch retains controlled variation and may be further customised through bespoke colour, blend and field curation upon request.

Availability

OTR (Off-the-Rack) Stock

Availability depends on the component with the lowest available stock quantity.

Where available inventory is insufficient for project requirements, additional quantities may be available through production, archive allocation, or bespoke commissioning.

Visualisation Note

Project visualisations may include digitally generated environments used to explore spatial possibilities.

While the surrounding setting may be conceptual, the ceramic surface itself is an authentic VLVLK material system designed and produced within our studio.

These visualisations are intended to assist with understanding potential interactions between material, light and architecture. They should be interpreted as exploratory studies rather than fixed installation specifications.

Final outcomes are influenced by project-specific curation, layout decisions, lighting conditions and installation context.

Wabi-Sabi Edition

This surface belongs to the VLVLK Wabi-Sabi Edition.

The edition embraces controlled variation as an essential component of ceramic authorship. Rather than pursuing industrial uniformity, it celebrates the nuanced differences that emerge through clay, glaze and firing behaviour.

Pieces may exhibit:

  • Tonal variation

  • Directional glaze movement

  • Surface movement and glaze drift

  • Crazing patterns

  • Subtle dimensional variation

  • Minor bowing or deformation

  • Irregular shade transitions

  • Authored variation across the field

These characteristics contribute to the visual depth, individuality and architectural presence of the installed surface.

Light & Shadow

The interaction between glaze, curvature and changing light conditions forms an important part of the field experience.

The cylindrical geometry creates alternating highlights and shadows across the surface, while gloss variation intensifies reflection and depth. Natural and artificial light reveal different aspects of the field throughout the day, allowing the surface to shift between quiet mineral tones and stronger smoked contrast.

Controlled Variability

Each piece is individually influenced by clay body, glaze application, surface curvature and firing behaviour. Variations in tone, density, transition marks, gloss response and material character are expected and form part of the intended field condition.

These variations should be interpreted as authored characteristics of the work rather than manufacturing defects.
