1. GENERAL INFORMATION

VLVLK-VEELVLAK hand-craft ceramic products combine semi-porcelain, vitrified stoneware, or terracotta clay bodies kiln-fired between 1220–1240 °C, providing low porosity (1–3%). Variations in size, shape, color, or surface are intrinsic to the handcrafted nature, reflecting our commitment to artistry and authenticity ("Wabi-Sabi").

Please plan your installation accordingly, to embrace the subtle character that create unique surfaces.

2. INSTALLATION, PLANNING & PREPARATIONS

2.1 PRE-INSTALLATION

Installers should be experienced with handcrafted materials, briefed on design intent, and understand the natural product variability. Plan layouts meticulously and conduct a “mock-up” installation test to confirm tile and grout appearance.

2.2 INSTALLATION

Unpack tiles and lay out at least 1 square meter to evaluate tonal balance and grout joint spacing (typically 1–5 mm, variable by design intent). Avoid placing large tiles adjacent to each other; irregular grout spacing may enhance harmony.

2.3 ADHESIVES

Use premium tile adhesives compatible with low-absorption vitrified products. Typically, flexible cement-based adhesives with keying or bonding agents are suitable. Premixed adhesives (e.g., Tile Flex) may be used but note longer open/working times.

  • Substrate Requirements: Ensure substrate is flat, sound, clean, and free from moisture/vapour exceeding adhesive tolerance per manufacturer’s technical datasheet (e.g., relative humidity limits for cement-based adhesives generally ≤ 75% RH).

  • Reference: Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for mixing, open time, curing times, and recommended application temperature ranges.

2.4 CUTTING

Use a fixed-bed wet tile cutter with a new diamond blade (e.g., Mactool) for clean cuts. Recommended blade speed and feed rates can be found in the blade manufacturer’s manual to minimize chipping. Wear adequate PPE (eye protection, gloves, and N95 dust mask). Employ dust extraction or water cooling methods to mitigate dust and overheating.

2.5 POLISHING CUT EDGES

Use a variable-speed hand polisher with a 200# or appropriate grit polishing pad. Apply water spray cooling to prevent overheating or edge microfractures. Lightly buff edges to smooth sharp corners only—excess polishing may alter tile appearance.

2.6 GROUT RELEASE

For vitrified unglazed, light-coloured clay bodies and crackled glazes, apply a grout release agent (e.g., TFC Tile & Floor Care grout release) to facilitate cleanup and prevent staining. Methods include spraying or wiping; refer to the product label for coverage rates and drying times (typically 30–60 minutes). Test in a discreet area prior to full application.

Note: Grout release may marginally affect grout adhesion; ensure the product used is compatible with your grout type and adhere strictly to application instructions.

2.7 GROUT APPLICATION

  • Cementitious Grout: Mix dry grout powder with recommended bonding additives (e.g., TFC Bonding Liquid or Weber-TYLON Bond-It) replacing water to improve adhesion, flexibility, and water resistance. Sanded grout is recommended for joints wider than 3 mm.

  • Mixing: Follow manufacturer mixing ratios and mixing times precisely; avoid over-mixing or under-mixing which can affect performance.

  • Testing: Always test grout color and compatibility on a small sample area before full application. Allow grout to cure fully before sealing (24-72 hours or per product datasheet).

2.7.1 Epoxy Grout Recommendations for Kitchen Countertops

For kitchen countertops exposed to moisture, heat, chemicals, and frequent cleaning, epoxy grout is strongly recommended for:

  • Non-porosity and waterproofing.

  • Superior chemical and stain resistance.

  • Antimicrobial properties (e.g., BioBlock® technology).

  • No sealing required.

  • Heat and flexural stress resistance.

Recommended South African epoxy grout brands: TAL Epoxy Adhesive & Grout, Mapei Kerapoxy CQ, and Litokol Starlike EVO.

Application best practices:

  • Follow manufacturer datasheets for precise mixing, pot life (typically 45–60 minutes), and temperature limits (10–30°C).

  • Use epoxy-specific tools; remove grout haze before curing completely using specified epoxy grout cleaners (e.g., Mapei Ultracare).

  • Ensure adequate ventilation and PPE (gloves and masks).

  • Avoid water or foot traffic until fully cured (generally 24-48 hours).

If epoxy is not feasible, high-quality cementitious grout with bonding additives and proper sealing is acceptable, with awareness of increased maintenance.

2.8 SEALANTS

  • Epoxy Grout: No sealing required.

  • Cement Grout: Apply penetrating, breathable sealers (e.g., TFC Invisible Sealer) post-grout curing. Consult sealer datasheets for application timing and number of coats. Reapply sealant annually in high-use or wet areas.

  • For tile surfaces, ensure sealants are compatible and will not alter surface appearance.

2.9 GROUT RECIPES

Use Weber-Tylon grout powder blends as guides; blend while dry and store in sealed containers. Test grout cures for final color and adjust ratios as needed before full application.

  • Option 1: White tonal mixtures (Tylon White, Super White).

  • Option 2–4: Variations incorporating Ivory and Light Grey for bone, cream, and grey hues.

Color may appear darker during curing or when wet; judge final appearance after drying.

2.10 CLEANING & CARING

  • Use neutral-pH cleaners (pH 6–8) approved by tile and grout manufacturers. Avoid abrasive or acidic products.

  • For epoxy-grouted surfaces, clean with recommended epoxy grout cleaners; promptly remove spills to prevent staining.

  • For cement-grouted surfaces, maintain resealing periodically and clean gently using mild detergents.

  • Use protected tools and soft cleaning cloths to prevent tile surface damage.

  • Monitor grout joints for cracks or deterioration; repair promptly to maintain integrity.

Additional Recommendations

  • Installer Training: We recommend installers be trained/certified in epoxy grout application and experienced with handcrafted tiles.

  • Safety: Use PPE (gloves, eye protection, respirators) especially when working with epoxy materials or cutting tools. Ensure adequate ventilation for chemical products.

  • Quality Control: Photograph and document layout and grout tests before full installation for client approvals and warranty records.

  • Environmental Conditions: Install tiles and grout within recommended temperature and humidity ranges per product datasheets for optimal results.

VLVLK INSTALLATION & CARE GUIDE

Revision: 2.1  Date: November 2025  Supersedes: Rev 2.0 (2024)

Issued by: VLVLK Production & Technical Team

NOTES TO CLIENT, ARCHITECT, DESIGNER, CONTRACTOR &/OR SUPERVISOR

This guide provides technical and care instructions for installing and maintaining VLVLK handcrafted ceramic surfaces. It is intended for professional installers and supervisors experienced in bespoke ceramic systems.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

VLVLK handcrafted ceramics combine semi-porcelain, vitrified stoneware, or terracotta clay bodies fired between 1220 – 1240 °C, achieving approximate porosity of 1 – 3 %, depending on the clay body and intended product purpose.

Natural variation in tone, dimension, and surface texture is intrinsic to our process and reflects the Wabi-Sabi principle of imperfection and authenticity.

Pre-sort and blend tiles from multiple boxes before installation to balance tonal range and ensure a harmonious surface.

2. INSTALLATION, PLANNING & PREPARATIONS

Flow Summary

Pre-Installation → Mock-Up → Adhesive Application → Cutting → Fixing → Grouting → Sealing → Cleaning → Handover

2.1 PRE-INSTALLATION

  • Ensure installers are experienced with handcrafted materials and fully briefed on design intent.
