OVERVIEW
SPIER Ice Cream Field documents a custom hand-painted ceramic surface system created for SPIER Wine Farm in 2026.
Developed as part of a site-specific hospitality experience, the work combines playful iconography, layered colour, and repeated hand-painted motifs to create a surface language that is both memorable and engaging. Ice creams, frozen treats, and celebratory graphic elements are distributed across the field to create a lively visual rhythm that responds directly to the placement and function of the installation.
The project demonstrates the ability of ceramic surfaces to contribute not only material performance but also atmosphere, identity, storytelling, and guest experience.
FIELD READ
The composition operates as a celebratory hospitality field.
Repeated motifs establish rhythm across the surface while colour variation introduces movement, delight, and visual discovery. The field is intentionally playful, creating an accessible and memorable interaction for visitors while maintaining the material depth and longevity associated with ceramic surfaces.
The project explores how narrative imagery can be integrated into hospitality environments without sacrificing material authenticity.
MATERIAL BEHAVIOUR
The work embraces the inherent variability of hand-painted ceramic production.
Variations in brushwork, colour density, line quality, painterly gesture, and chromatic intensity are retained as evidence of authorship. These characteristics contribute to the individuality of the installation and form part of its visual identity.
