COBALT BOTANICAL FIELD STUDY
OVERVIEW
Field Study Z2A4B6-FS is a unique ceramic archive work by Tebogo Sethole exploring botanical form, chromatic reduction, and the expressive potential of a monochromatic field.
Composed across fifteen ceramic modules, the work presents a layered botanical composition rendered entirely through tonal variations of cobalt blue. By limiting the chromatic palette, the work shifts attention toward gesture, structure, rhythm, and the relationship between botanical form and ceramic surface.
Produced during an active period of artistic exploration, the work records an investigation into monochromatic painting, botanical abstraction, and field composition. The restrained palette allows the movement of the brush and the character of the imagery to become primary subjects within the field.
As a Field Study, this work exists as a singular archive artefact within the VLVLK Studio Archive.
FIELD READ
The composition operates as a chromatic botanical field.
Botanical forms emerge through a hierarchy of tonal values rather than colour differentiation. Large floral forms, stems, and foliage overlap across the composition, creating a visual rhythm that moves continuously through the field.
The use of cobalt creates a relationship to historical ceramic traditions while simultaneously maintaining a contemporary painterly language. The field can be read as both botanical imagery and an exploration of mark-making, transparency, and chromatic discipline.
At a distance the composition reads as a unified blue field. At closer proximity individual brush gestures, tonal transitions, and botanical relationships become increasingly apparent.
MATERIAL BEHAVIOUR
The work embraces the inherent variability of ceramic production and hand-painted imagery.
Variations in brush pressure, pigment loading, transparency, saturation, tonal intensity, and surface interaction remain visible throughout the composition. These characteristics are preserved as evidence of process and are considered part of the authorship of the work.
COLOUR DETAIL
Monochromatic / Layered / Cobalt
A layered palette of cobalt blue tonalities ranging from pale translucent washes to deep saturated blue accents.
The chromatic behaviour creates depth, movement, and atmosphere while maintaining visual cohesion across the field.

STUDIO ARCHIVE
Field Studies are unique works generated during the evolution of VLVLK surface systems, hand-painted investigations, chromatic exploration, botanical studies, material experimentation, and field composition research.
They are preserved as singular records of process, experimentation, and authorship within the Studio Archive.
