Pools of deep green, violet-black mineral blooms, metallic boundaries and crystallised territories emerge across the surface, creating the impression of aerial wetlands, cellular organisms and evolving landscapes suspended between geology and biology.

FULL DESCRIPTION
FIELD ORGANISM_01 — Violet Wetlands is a large-scale ceramic mural authored by Tebogo Sethole for the FRĒODŌM collection.
The work explores the boundary between control and emergence.
Rather than depicting a landscape, the mural allows landscape-like forms to emerge through ceramic behaviour itself. Layers of reactive glazes interact during firing to generate territories, membranes, islands, channels, blooms and volcanic events that resemble aerial views of wetlands, estuaries, biological systems and microscopic life forms.
The mural operates simultaneously at multiple scales.
From a distance, the field reads as an abstract topography of interconnected green territories suspended within a violet mineral ground.
At close range, crystalline eruptions, metallic halos, glaze rivers, volcanic textures and iridescent transitions reveal themselves as records of material transformation.
No two areas of the work repeat.
Each section contains unique evidence of glaze movement, chemical interaction and thermal history.
The resulting field exists somewhere between painting, sculpture, geology and architecture.
Rather than illustrating nature, the mural behaves like nature.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Field Organism explores the idea that materials possess their own intelligence.
Within the firing process, glaze systems migrate, collide, crystallise and organise themselves into patterns that cannot be fully predicted or repeated.
The work embraces these behaviours as collaborators rather than defects.
The resulting mural becomes an artefact of emergence — a record of forces acting across time, temperature, chemistry and gravity.
