BOTANICAL FIELD STUDY
OVERVIEW
Field Study X7Y8Z9-FS is a unique ceramic archive work by Craig Chiwoto exploring botanical imagery, image transfer, chromatic layering, and modular field composition.
Composed across twenty ceramic modules, the work investigates how imagery behaves across a ceramic field rather than a singular surface. Botanical forms emerge through the interaction of adjacent tiles, creating a composition that shifts between image, material, and field.
Produced during an active period of studio exploration, the work preserves evidence of experimentation, transfer behaviour, registration shifts, tonal variation, and ceramic transformation. These characteristics remain visible as part of the authorship of the work and document a developmental moment within the evolution of the studio’s visual language.
As a Field Study, this work exists as a singular archive artefact within the VLVLK Studio Archive.
FIELD READ
The composition explores the relationship between botanical growth and modular ordering.
Elongated botanical forms rise vertically through the field, creating a sense of upward movement and organic expansion. The imagery occupies only portions of the assembled surface, allowing large areas of open ceramic ground to remain active within the reading of the work.
The field can be understood simultaneously as a botanical image, a modular ceramic system, and a study of spatial balance between density and absence.
MATERIAL BEHAVIOUR
The work embraces the inherent variability of ceramic production.
Subtle fluctuations in image density, transfer registration, tonal intensity, surface character, and ceramic response remain visible throughout the composition. These variations are preserved as evidence of process and are considered part of the identity of the work.
COLOUR DETAIL
Botanical Green
Layered botanical imagery expressed through muted sage, olive, eucalyptus, moss, and deep green tonalities against a warm off-white ceramic ground.
The chromatic behaviour is soft and atmospheric, allowing the imagery to emerge gradually across the field while maintaining a calm architectural presence.
