30 000 Mosaics

Recently, we undertook an exciting custom order for a project in Seychelles, which required our expertise in crafting high-quality mosaic surfaces.

Initial Inquiry: Setting the Stage

Our journey began with a detailed inquiry from Sophie (note: this is not her real name), who expressed a need for custom mosaic tiles suitable for a wet room installation. Commercially available mosaic tiles that met the aesthetic was not suitable for use on floors, so she reached out for our assistance.

“We need this tile in the green colour, as well as white. Are you able to create something like this that is a bit more of a ‘perfect’ tile, not to have that much of a handmade look?”
– Sophie

Understanding her requirements, we assured her that we could create a product that met her high standards.

Sample Requests: Enhancing Client Vision

To help Sophie visualise her options, we arranged to send physical samples, a crucial step in ensuring alignment with her aesthetic vision.

“As we discussed, the physical samples you requested are on their way to you now. Please share your feedback as soon as possible; this is crucial in meeting the deadline.”
– VLVLK Team

This proactive approach fostered a collaborative atmosphere, allowing us to ensure that the final product would exceed her expectations and be delivered on time.

Design and Production: Precision in Every Detail

After receiving the initial feedback, we moved into the design phase. Sophie provided specific dimensions for the tiles, which were to be 48mm x 12mm x 6mm thick, and requested that they be mounted on mesh sheets for easy installation.

“Are you also able to put these tiles on mesh sheets for easy installation?”
– Sophie

Our team then embarked on the meticulous process of creating the tiles, which are fired at a high temperature of 1225 degrees Celsius to ensure a low porosity surface, making them perfect for wet environments.

The Production Process

Each tile undergoes a series of steps, including hand cutting, drying, bisque firing, glazing, and final inspections.

“The thousands of hand-crafted pieces are then cleaned, checked, washed, dipped, and washed again, before packing into kilns, 3200 pieces at a time.”
– VLVLK Team

This attention to detail is crucial to achieving the organic, tactile liveliness that our clients love, which cannot be replicated through automated processes.

Colour Matching: A Collaborative Effort

Throughout the project, effective communication regarding colour matching was key. Sophie requested updates on the colour trials, and we promptly informed her of our progress:

“I'm pleased to inform you that our trials with the darker colour have been successful.”
– VLVLK Team

By keeping Sophie informed, we ensured she felt included and engaged in the creative process.

Final Approval: Confidence in Craftsmanship

Once we received final approval on the colours, we moved forward with the production of the tiles. Sophie confirmed her order, specifying quantities for both green and white mosaics.

“You may proceed with the production of these tiles.”
– Sophie

With her approval secured, we ensured that all the tiles were prepared for delivery as scheduled.

Project Outcome: Realizing the Vision

In the end, we successfully delivered Sophie’s custom tiles, consisting of 14 boxes of white mosaics and 10 boxes of green mosaics. The project was completed on time, and we were thrilled to hear that our client was satisfied with the result.

“Thank you again for making these in time.”
– Sophie

While we can't share the final installation photos due to client privacy, we can assure you that the results are truly stunning.
